If your teenager requires teeth straightening treatment, Invisalign® for teens, an alternative to braces, may be a viable option. However, everything has pros and cons, and Invisalign is no different. Here are four things to consider as you research different teeth-straightening options for your child.

How Invisalign for teens works

Invisalign uses clear aligners that sit over teeth and straighten them using the application of pressure. A set of aligners is worn for a few weeks before the patient returns to the orthodontist for a new set, each time getting closer to attaining the straight smile they desire. The straighteners can be removed for eating and oral care but should be kept in the mouth for 22 hours daily to produce optimal results. If a teen wears them less than the recommended daily time, it could take longer for their teeth to move into the preferred positions.

Things to consider about Invisalign

Before deciding whether Invisalign is the right choice for your child, think about the following:

1. How much work will the child require?

Whether or not a teen qualifies for Invisalign depends on the condition of their teeth. If they have severe crooked or twisted teeth or a severe under or overbite, Invisalign is likely, not viable. If a teen needs teeth pulled, Invisalign may not be a good fit. However, dental aligners could work well if a teen's teeth are slightly or moderately crooked.

2. Are they prone to losing things?

Since the patient can easily remove the Invisalign Teen aligners, there is always a chance of losing an aligner tray if the patient is not careful. This is especially true for busy teenagers rushing to eat lunch at school or playing sports that require a mouthguard. In addition, some teens tend to be absent-minded and can easily toss the clear trays in the trash. Thus, the orthodontist will review the options with the patient before deciding on a specific treatment.

Though Invisalign can be misplaced or lost easily, it does allow for easier oral care. Since teens can remove the aligners, they can care for their mouths like they normally would without them.

3. Are they self-conscious?

If parents have an especially sensitive teenager who is self-conscious about appearance, Invisalign could be a wise option. Clear aligners are hardly visible to others, allowing teens to move through their day without fearing peer ridicule.

4. How is their pain tolerance?

Invisalign is a comfortable option for people who want straighter teeth. However, there will be an adjustment period every time they receive new trays. Additionally, aligners are far less likely to break or crack, saving parents and teens from unplanned visits to a dental office.
