Invisalign® clear aligner trays are not just for adults; teenagers and some children can also benefit from this treatment. In fact, orthodontists often recommend it as an alternative to braces for teens because it is discreet, comfortable, and easy to care for. While wearing these trays is relatively effortless, there are some ways to help improve the entire process. Follow the tips below to stay on track with treatment goals — and maintain better oral health along the way.
4 helpful tips for teens with Invisalign®
When using Invisalign, it is important to follow the instructions carefully. In addition, an orthodontist may make additional recommendations specific to the patient's unique needs. These tips can also be helpful for younger children who use Invisalign.
1. Keep a toothbrush and toothpaste on hand
Patients should safely remove and store clear aligner trays before eating or drinking anything other than water. This helps prevent food and bacteria from getting trapped inside the appliances and against the teeth and gums, which could lead to tooth decay and gum inflammation. Trapped particles can also stain the trays or cause them to smell.
Before replacing the trays, the wearer should brush and rinse their teeth thoroughly every time. Otherwise, particles that the saliva cannot wash away can cause the same unwanted results. In addition, teens should always keep a toothbrush and toothpaste with them so they can eat and drink as needed without waiting too long to replace their Invisalign trays.
2. Clean the aligners regularly
Proper rinsing and brushing practices help keep trays and teeth clean, but it is still possible for trays to develop odors or a cloudy appearance over time. Teens should clean their trays daily to keep the material clear, bright, and fresh. Brushing with lukewarm water and a soft toothbrush can help remove any debris. Alternatively, an Invisalign® cleaning system can remove buildup without damaging the appliances. Do not clean the aligners more than necessary, as they could become brittle and break.
3. Do not skip a day of Invisalign
Missing a day or two of Invisalign can prolong treatment. However, it can also make the trays more painful, especially if the teen attempts to skip trays. To reap the full benefits of this alternative to braces for teens, wear the aligners daily as recommended.
4. Add blue compliance indicators
The ability to remove the aligner trays as needed is convenient for eating and cleaning. However, the patient must remember to return the aligner to their mouth as soon as possible and keep the treatment on track. Failing to wear clear aligners for at least 20 hours each day could slow treatment progress.
Orthodontists can add blue compliance indicators to each aligner to help parents hold their teenagers accountable. These blue dots will be located toward the back of each tray so as not to take away from the discreet nature of Invisalign. The dots will fade as the patient wears the aligners. During each checkup, the orthodontist can check the dots to see whether the teen has been wearing their trays according to treatment recommendations.
