Invisalign® for Teens is a system devised for teenagers that uses clear plastic devices worn to straighten teeth as an alternative to metal braces. Invisalign has the added benefit of being removable and less noticeable than traditional braces. Teens will consult with our orthodontist to discuss whether or not Invisalign is right for them. This article will review common questions we receive to better help you and your teen prepare for the consultation.

Who is an ideal Invisalign for Teens candidate?

Invisalign for Teens is ideal for patients from 12 to 18 years of age. In fact, the system is specially designed for those with a few primary (baby) teeth and still developing jaws.

Additionally, Invisalign for Teens is ideal for those with slight to moderate alignment issues (malocclusions). However, the system can correct a range of issues, including an overbite, underbite, crossbite, open bite, crooked teeth, protruding teeth, and uneven spacing between teeth (diastema).

The orthodontist will need the teen to be diligent when following instructions at home. In addition, the treatment duration can lengthen if teens lack responsibility in caring for their aligners and teeth in-between appointments.

What to expect from the consultation?

During the initial dental consultation, the orthodontist will review what the patient hopes to accomplish from Invisalign treatment. It may also involve our team thoroughly cleaning the teeth and gums to ensure the teen's oral health is up to par before beginning treatment. If we find an oral condition, such as gum disease or a cavity, we must address the issue before beginning Invisalign.

Patients will also undergo X-rays and likely have a 3D model taken of their teeth. The orthodontist will then formulate a plan specific to the patient and review the expected time frame of treatment. To finish, patients and their parents will sit with our team to review costs and determine their payment plan to begin treatment.

What to expect during the treatment process?

The treatment time depends highly on one's needs, ranging between 12 and 18 months on average. Teens will receive new aligners every two to three weeks as their teeth shift. It is normal to experience an adjustment period with each new set of aligners. In addition, there may be soreness and sensitivity because the aligners apply constant pressure that increases with every new set. However, teens must wear their devices between 20 to 22 hours per day, only removing them when eating, completing their oral hygiene routine, or participating in activities that require a mouth guard.

What are the disadvantages of Invisalign for teens?

While Invisalign comes with many advantages, some of the disadvantages include:

  • High cost
  • Frequent appointments
  • Does not treat severe malocclusions
  • Tooth and gum discomfort

While it is important to consider these disadvantages, our team can help in any way that we can. For example, we can provide payment plan options, treatment alternatives, and methods to help with discomfort during treatment.
